Daniel Meakin’s story is one of artistic passion, international experience and a deep connection to community. Originally from Saddleworth, Daniel’s journey took him from art school in Yorkshire to a two-decade career in Barcelona, before returning to the UK in 2022 to immerse himself in the thriving Liverpool and Cheshire art scenes and a studio in West Kirby.

His early years were shaped by supportive parents, who gave him the emotional and creative freedom to pursue art.

‘Art was the only thing I enjoyed doing and was good at,’ he says.

After completing his undergraduate degree in Bradford, Daniel moved to Barcelona for his Masters, attracted by the city’s rich cultural energy.

‘I taught English to supplement my art career,’ he says. ‘I worked to build good contacts, from North America to Germany and Australia, and collaborated closely with galleries, even taking on curatorial roles. My parents were in business, so I had that mindset about selling and marketing.’

This practical approach helped him secure private and public commissions across continents, such as a notable three-week project in Miami and multiple exhibitions from Europe to the Middle East.

A hallmark of Daniel’s work is experimentation with upcycling and mixed media. Inspired by the vibrant street culture of Barcelona, he painted on found objects, such as old furniture, doors and shutters, creating unique pieces that challenge traditional canvas art.

Daniel’s move back to the UK was prompted by lockdown reflections and family ties; his sister has lived in West Kirby for more than 20 years. The walls of his studio in the Wirral coastal town boast a vivid mix of coastal abstracts, geometric forms and collage works, often incorporating wallpaper swatches and fabric scraps gifted by a fashion designer friend.

Daniel sees art as both therapy and tradition; family stories weave into his artwork, from paintings inspired by peacocks that frequented his parents’ garden in North Wales, to portraits honouring relatives, embodying a rich personal history.

He has original pieces, filled with colour and vibrancy, for sale from as little as £45 to thousands, and happily accepts commissions tailored to each client’s wishes, whether it’s a portrait, a depiction of a favourite object or place or something whimsically unique. He also maintains his Barcelona-inspired approach to furniture painting, transforming tired, outdated furniture into vibrant, playful works of art, full of colour and character.

Daniel aims to expand his artistic footprint internationally while remaining rooted locally.

‘You’re never too old to do what you really want, you just have to keep going,’ he says.
